Active Nyiragongo volcano eruption – This was the last eruption that occurred after some of the previous ones that occurred in 1912, 1938, 1948 and1970s. It was on 17 January 2002 and the lastest is 22nd May 2021 that the Volcano emitted lava which quickly flowed to Goma town up to the shores of Lake Kivu. It is said to have killed about 150 people, destroyed a lot of property in the town, and blocked part of the run way at Goma Airstrip. It is very safe to hike and have a night at the Volcano summit because the eruptions are monitored.
Nyiragongo Volcano Hiking Tips
Hiking to the summit of the most active Volcano is a worthwhile experience you will have in your entire life. Anyone would watch the red glow of the Volcano from as far as Gisenyi town but hiking and viewing it from the summit is more thrilling. The trail from the starting point to the summit is about 8.5kilometres.
You are required to prepare for the hike early with your booking, strong hiking boots, thick rain jacket, drinking water, warm clothes and a torch if you plan to spend the night at the summit in the Nyiragongo shelters.
Be at Kibati briefing patrol post at 9:00am. This is the starting point for the hike where you will get guidelines for the hike and set off for the hike at 10:00am. After starting the hike, it will take you about 5-6 hours to arrive at the summit and there you will view the magical red glow from the boiling magma. It is possible to hike to the top and descend in one day.
Porters are available at the starting point and these are used at your own expense. Utilize them if you have a lot of luggage.
The minimum age for hiking to Mountain Nyiragongo is 12years. Anyone below the age 12 years is not allowed to hike. A certain level of fitness is required to be physically fit and well hydrated.
