African Rhino Tracking – Rhino tracking in Uganda – Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary – Murchison falls National park

African Rhino Tracking. The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and Wildlife Ranch is located in Nakasongola district and is the proud home of the only wild rhinos in Uganda besides those in the Uganda Wildlife Education Center. The Rhino re-introduction project is a project of Rhino Fund Uganda and Uganda Wildlife Authority. This Sanctuary is 176km north of Kampala on the Gulu highway towards Murchison Falls National Park at Nakitoma Trading Centre. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where you will be able to see Rhinos in the wild.

Presently the sanctuary is home to twenty seven (27) Southern White Rhinos including two babies. The sanctuary has become increasingly popular with tourists for Rhino Trekking, Shoebill Trek and Canoe Ride, Bird Watching, Night Walk, Nature Walk and Relaxation.

Rhino tracking;

Rhino Trekking in Uganda is only done in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. This activity is always done on foot sometimes after a short drive within the sanctuary. Watch and view the Southern White Rhinos on foot in the company of well-trained rangers who will guide you through the bush to where the Rhinos are on the day of your visit.

You will get the opportunity to watch these endangered, magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. These Rhinos are free to move around on 7000 hectares of land.  It is often necessary to drive to the areas where the rhinos are, before taking the bush trek. While at the sanctuary you may also encounter a range of other wildlife species including Uganda kobs, Oribis, Bush bucks, Water bucks among others and a number of Bird species.

Shoebill trek on Canoe ride

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary offers one of the most sought bird species to be seen in Uganda the Shoebill stork. This is one of the only places that you are almost always guaranteed to see the storks. The best sighting has been 11 birds in one trip, within our swamps where these prehistoric looking birds are nesting. Start your early morning shoebill trek and canoe ride through the swamps and this gives you the opportunity to find the shoebill and also to see the beautiful Ugandan sunrise over Lugogo Swamp. Water birds are plentiful and this activity is a must for anyone who loves nature or is interested in birding and this activity is so early in the morning, you must stay the night as you are unable to enter the sanctuary before 07H30.

Bird watching

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary contains over 300 different bird species. There are four bird watching trails within the sanctuary which cover woodlands, swamps and savannah. The bird guides here are well conversant with the sanctuary and are excellent and this is an activity that cannot be missed by bird lovers. You will probably get to see some of the other game on the sanctuary while doing your bird walk. Like it has been always birders need to spend more time on the sanctuary and enjoy the array of feathered friends the sanctuary has.

Nature walks

Take a walk in the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and enjoy the nature with its sounds and smells. Trained guides will take you on a walk through the lush bushes in the sanctuary a home to a wide variety of animals, bird species and reptiles to enjoy the natural habitats in the wild. Accommodation

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary offers peace and tranquility in beautiful surroundings. The Sanctuary has a variety of accommodations to meet your overnight needs. Guest houses have both private and shared indoor facilities. The budget rooms use a shared ablution with full facilities. There is also a mid-range safari lodge known as Amuka Safari Lodge for those who wish to upgrade.

Restaurant

Before or after your activities, you can choose to have lunch at one of the restaurant within the mentioned accommodation facilities. They all provide you with fresh, tasty and satisfying meals including breakfast, lunch, dinner and takeaways. They also have bars fully stocked with a variety of drinks, beers, alcohol, juices, tea and coffee at all times.

Camping

For those who are interested in camping, the sanctuary has got grounds where people can camp and are pristine and located very close to the headquarters. The electricity here is run on solar power with a generator back up and all rooms have light and warm water for your shower in the evening. You can charge your phone batteries as needed upon request.
