Amahoro gorilla family
Amahoro gorilla family one of habituated guerilla groups in Volcanoes National Park in Northern Rwanda. Volcanoes national park is a home to 10 gorilla families and the group derived its name from a Kinyarwanda word “Amahoro” meaning peace which clearly shows the peaceful nature of this gorilla group. Visitor that have trekked this gorilla family confirms that it is indeed the humble family in the entire region. A mahoro family is led by a silverback called Ubumwe and this means togetherness also depicting the uniting nature of this giant mountain gorilla.
The humble and peaceful silverback Ubumwe has caused loss of many members from his family to other groups because of his reserved nature and can’t fight back in cases where he is confronted by other silverbacks. It is the most preferred family for travelers looking for very calm and peaceful trekking experience.
Amahoro gorilla family inhabits the lower slopes of Bisoke Volcano, but can move even to the higher slopes and accessing it involves quite a lengthy hike. It is absolutely one of the hardest families to track in Volcanoes national park.
It is composed of 17 individuals including 1 silverback (Ubumwe), 2 black backs, 5 adult females, four babies and 5 juveniles. However, these numbers are not constant as there are new births, migrations, deaths, and other factors keep altering the family composition.
Given the fact that it is located on the slopes of Mount Bisoke, trekking Amahoro family is not an easy task. Especially during rainy seasons when the trails are slippery and with much undergrowth, but nevertheless, an encounter with this humble and peaceful group is worth all the hustles of hiking through the rugged slopes of Bisoke.
Trekking Amahoro family, just like any other Gorilla group in Rwanda allows only maximum of 8 people aged 15 years and above. And a gorilla permit to access the group costs 1500$ per person per trek.
