Bet time to witness Serengeti wildebeest migration – The Serengeti National Park in Tanzania was established in 1952. It is home to the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth – the great migration of wildebeest and zebra. The resident population of lions, cheetah, elephants, giraffe, and birds is also impressive. There’s a wide variety of accommodation available, from luxury lodges to mobile camps. The park covers 5,700 sq miles, (14,763 sq km), it’s larger than Connecticut, with at most a couple of hundred vehicles driving around.
The Park can be divided into 3 sections. The popular southern/central part (Seronera Valley) is what the Maasai called the “Serengeti”, the land of endless plains. Its classic savannah is dotted with acacias and filled with wildlife. The western corridor is marked by the Grumeti River and has more forests and dense bush. The north, Lobo area, which meets up with Kenya’s Masai Mara Reserve, is the least visited section.
The Wildebeest Migration is all year movement of wildebeest and angulates which is described in 3 stages between the Masai Mara and Serengeti so depending on what you’re interested in that will determine when you should travel and that will be the best time travel
In January the wildebeest cows start arriving and getting ready for giving birth, February and March is the beginning of new life in the wildebeest migration circle where 7000-8000 wildebeest calves are born in a very intense predator presence in the Ndutu plains, and those looking to witness that will have to travel between February and March
April the wildebeest calves are strong on the ground and the wildebeest start heading towards the western corridor and central Ngorongoro conservation area and the cows are ready for mating with the cows and this is another interesting stage of the wildebeest migration
At the end of June, the wildebeest start arriving at the shores of Mara River getting ready for the dramatic river crossing which is one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in Africa so those looking for the River crossing must travel between July and October and Masai Mara is at its peak
Our great adventure safaris experts recommend traveling to Serengeti between February and March for the best wildlife viewing and July to October for the wildebeest Mara river crossing
