Facts about gorilla habituation experience – Gorilla habituation experience is a term used to mean a process of making Gorillas get used to human presence. Gorilla habituation is a new activity introduced in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park by the Ugandan Wildlife Authority a government body taking part in conservation of the wildlife in all National parks. During Gorilla habituation, the researchers, scientists and rangers frequently pay visits to an identified Gorilla family on daily basis and this exercise can last for 2-3 years until when the Gorillas are used to the see humans around them, then after they are opened for tourists.
Gorilla habituation takes much longer time compared to the normal Gorilla tracking, therefore travellers on Gorilla habituation are advised to raise early 6:30am for briefing at the park headquarters since the activity normally kicks off by 7:00am while the normal Gorilla tracking starts at 8:30am therefore Gorilla habituation, starts a bit early due to the different time frame spent while with the Gorillas in their natural habitat once you meet them.
When taking part in Gorilla habituation, travellers are recommended to have a valid Gorilla habituation permit obtained from the Uganda Wildlife Authority at a fee of USD1500 per person per trek. The permit allows you to spend four hours with the Gorillas in their natural habitat which starts counting when you find the fresh trails from where they nested the previous night.
Facts about gorilla habituation experience – Currently, Gorilla habituation experience is only introduced in Rushaga sector one of the southern sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Reason being that its only in rushaga region is that they have two Gorilla families under habituation process so travellers on habituation will therefore book their habituation permits for Rushaga sector and will be advised to book accommodation nearer to the habituation region since this activity starts a bit early than the normal Gorilla tracking. There are many reasons that differentiate Gorilla tracking from Gorilla habituation experience. The first being the difference in permit price, Gorilla tracking permit price costs USD700 per permit and Gorilla habituation permit costs USD1500 per permit. Gorilla tracking permit allows you only one hour with Gorillas while Gorilla habituation allows you to spend four hours with Gorillas under habituation, not only that, during Gorilla habituation, you are an active participant in the habituation process. Also, Gorilla tracking takes place in all the four sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park with one habituated Gorilla family. Sectors of Bwindi Forest include; Rushaga, Ruhija, Buhoma and Nkuringo sectors. While Gorilla habituation is currently done only in the Rushaga sector having Gorilla families under habituation.
The minimum age recommended by the Uganda Wildlife Authority for Gorilla habituation is 15 years as well as for Gorilla tracking.in terms of number of people visiting each Gorilla family is that Gorilla tracking allows 8 people to visit each Gorilla group per day while Gorilla habituation is four people per day visiting the Gorilla family under habituation.
