Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is found in the South-Western part of Uganda, 550 kilometres from Kampala the capital of Kampala. Located on the edge of the Albertine valley, bwindi forest has different tree species, with over 350 bird species, Butterflies; forest Elephants, Buffaloes, Antelopes as well as the endangered Mountain Gorillas. Bwindi Impenetrable has different habituated Gorilla families with Two Gorilla families in Nkuringo sector, Eight Gorilla families in Rushaga sector, Four Gorilla families in Ruhija sector and Five in Buhoma sector making a total of nineteen habituated Gorilla families in Bwindi forest.

Ruhija sector has got an advantage of more eco-tourism experience with an excellent location positioned between kabale Town and Buhoma the northern sector of the forest making it easy to access from both sides. This sector is not as busy as other sectors and has several activities besides Gorilla tracking which are bird watching, Nature walks and Cultural interaction with the Batwa community. Ruhija Gorilla permits costs USD700 per person per trek and you will spend one hour with the mountain Gorillas once you meet them in the jungle. These Gorilla permits are only purchased and issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and you are always advised to book your Gorilla permits in advance as they are on a high demand. Getting there

There are daily domestic flights to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park from Entebbe International Airport operated by Aerolink Uganda who offer both scheduled and charter flights. However, there is no direct flight to Ruhija but you can fly to Kihihi Airfield where you will be picked up by Great Adventure Safaris senior guide and drive to your booked lodge. The drive time to Ruhija from Kihihi Airfield is about two hours through Bwindi forest and some communities with scenic views at most points. All passengers are allowed a weight of not more than 15 kilograms per person and excess is charged USD3 per kilogram. There are also private charters available for clients who have special travel requirements and those who might need to travel as a family and children below the ages of two years are free of charge.Note, there are no luxury safari lodges in Ruhija, so you can stay in Buhoma and trek gorillas in Ruhija sector.

Best time to travel

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is open for Gorilla tracking all year round, only that it is important to note that the forest is a tropical rainforest and it receives rain at any time. When you happen to travel during the months of March to May and November there are more chances of higher rains, you will as well be able to get some discounts from some Lodges for your accommodation. The best months for Gorilla tracking are June to August and December to February since they receive the lowest rainfall and the forest is less slippery.
