We always try our best to ensure that our client properly understands what they are signing up for. Here we explain what Gorilla tracking is, where Gorilla trekking is done, the price of a Gorilla Permit, the best time to trek Gorillas, what to expect while on your trek and also recommend things to carry and wear on your Gorilla tracking for Ugandan citizens and resident.
This is an adventure experience for once in a lifetime that involves hiking up uneven terrain, mountains and through a rush vegetation cover together with the National Park rangers and porters using machetes to create a temporary trail to the Mountain Gorillas.
Mountain Gorilla tracking in Africa is done in three African countries of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Uganda and Rwanda are the safest places to trek the Mountain Gorillas as of today. The Democratic Republic of Congo is not that safe because of the political insurgency and civil wars within the country which makes it unsafe to visit. Uganda has got two National Parks where one can trek Mountain Gorillas and these are Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks well as Rwanda has got only Volcanoes National Park.
The price of Uganda Gorilla Permits is USD700 per person per trek for foreign non-residents, USD700 per person per trek for foreign residents and UGX250,000 for Ugandan citizens. All Gorilla Permit fees mentioned above include: entrance fee to the National Park, 1 Gorilla trekking permit and guiding fees on your trek.
Gorilla tracking can be done at any time of the year though it rains or shines but the best time is in the dry months of June, July, August, December, January, and February. This is the best time when the trails are dry and not very slippery. Trekkers are likely to enjoy a fairly drier Gorilla tracking experience and with a good weather for photography.
The morning of your Gorilla tracking day starts with dressing up in the appropriate Gorilla trekking gear. Your guide will then drive with you to the briefing point for a briefing about the dos and the don’ts after your breakfast with your packed lunch and enough drinking water. After the briefing you will then start your Gorilla walk in to the Forest and start your Gorilla tracking experience together with the National Park rangers who will explain more about the forest and tell you about the plants, trees, insects, bird species and all that you are interested in while in the forest.
When you find these giant apes, you will be allowed to spend one hour of viewing and photography before returning to the park offices for a graduation ceremony where you will be rewarded a certificate in recognition upon your successful Gorilla tracking experience and the support towards the conservation of these endangered Mountain Gorillas.
