Where to see gorillas in Africa?

Uganda
Uganda is home to over 19 gorilla families of which the majority live in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park which is a great ancient forest so dense that parts of it have remained hidden from human view for centuries.
In the south of the country lies Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, which borders Rwanda’s Volcanoes national park and Congo’s Virunga National Park. The park is home to one gorilla family, the Nyakagezi Group, and only eight people per day are allowed to visit the family.
Rwanda
Tracking gorillas in Rwanda is safe and relatively accessible. At the latest count, there are approximately 1,000 mountain gorillas in the wild, with 604 in the Virunga Massif. The population is slowly increasing, thanks to concerted efforts between our governments, communities, and NGOs.
Twelve gorilla families are living in the Volcanoes National Park, which is fully habituated, with a few others habituated solely for scientific research. The groups, or troops, consist of at least one silverback along with several females and youngsters. The families are known as Susa, Igisha, Karisimbi, Sabyinyo, Amahoro, Agashya, Kwitonda, Umubano, Hirwa, Bwenge, Ugyenda and Muhoza.
Democratic Republic of Congo
The Democratic Republic of Congo is the only country where visitors can track both mountain gorillas and their lowland cousins in the wild. It is the best country for seeing wild eastern lowland gorillas. Lowland gorillas can also be seen in zoos around the world while the mountain gorilla can only thrive in the wild. Lowland gorillas in DR Congo can be tracked at the Kahuzi Beiga National Park while the mountain gorillas are found in Virunga National Park.
Uganda and Rwanda are very safe countries to go for wildlife safaris. There is still instability in certain parts of DR Congo but the country’s unique attractions make her simply irresistible – DR Congo is the only country where you can see both silverback mountain gorillas and lowland gorillas. Moreover, there is the breathtaking Nyiragongo Lava Lake which is the only one tourists around the world can pay to see. Security and safety while watching silverback gorillas during a Congo Safari is assured by assigning armed rangers to move with visitors throughout their gorilla tracking safari. A gorilla safari in Congo may be unpredictable because of the insecurity around the Virunga National Park, but the park management is prepared to go to great lengths to protect tourists including closing the park if things appear to be getting out of hand.
