Kigosi National Park Tanzania – Kigosi Game Reserve was established in 1983; it is the third Game Reserve in Tanzania after the Selous and Rungwa Game Reserve and covers an area equivalent to 7,000 square km.
Kigosi Game Reserve is in Bukombe and Mbogwe districts, (Geita Region), Biharamulo (Kagera Region), Kahama (Shinyanga Region) and Kaliua in Tabora Region. The reserve is part of Tanzania’s four wetlands Ramsar Sites. Swamps, papyrus reeds, miombo woodland grassland in the flood plain and riverine forest. Waterbucks, crocodile, lion, hartebeest, ducks and shoe bill.
The Kigosi game reserve extends from Bukombe and Kahama Districts in Shinyanga Region up to Urambo District in Tabora Region.
By road
The reserve is easily accessible by road using four wheel drive cars.
By air
The area can also be accessed by chartered aircrafts.
The maximum temperature of the area is 29 degree C.
Rainfall
There are two rainfall peaks annually in this reserve and these appear in February and November. The dry season starts in mid-May and ends in mid-October. Annual rainfall varies between 1,000m and 1,500m.
Flood plain
Kigosi game reserve is one of the largest and excellent reserves in East African which have flood plain and wetland ecosystem which has become a huge habitat for wildlife production and breeding.
Species of Birds and wild mammals
This reserve provides an important wild animal protection and feeding area during dry seasons for migratory animals which includes water birds and large mammal species.
Hunting activities are possible in this park but you must contact Great adventure safaris for more information and permit acquisition.
Game viewing is moderate but animals like Waterbucks, crocodile, lion, hartebeest.
Bird watching
It is good to visit the area during dry season from June to September usually there is less rain fall and the grass is shorter and game and bird watching is superb.
