Leisure launch trips in Murchison falls – The 3893kilometres squared Murchison Falls National Park forms the core of Uganda’s largest protected area, containing a wide variety of wildlife including big game, forest primates, and 450 bird species. The mighty Nile, the Longest River in the world, flows through the heart of the park for a distance of 120km, on its 6500km journey from Lake Victoria to Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea.
The park’s centerpiece is the explosive, 40m high Murchison Falls where the Nile is forced through a 6-meter gap in the rift valley escarpment. The Falls separate two very different rivers. Upstream, the river races down a turbulent 80kilometres channel punctuated with rapids. Downstream, the Nile flows quietly towards Lake Albert which it enters through a large papyrus delta. It is this peaceful 40km stretch of river which provides the park’s prime wildlife spectacle and which our boats explore.
The leisure cruise upriver from the jetty at Paraa on the South or North bank to view Murchison Falls at the head of the Fajardo Gorge has been the park’s most popular attraction since the 1950s. We run a scheduled trip every afternoon departing by 2.30 pm as well as in the mornings at 08.30 am and 11.00 am when demand requires. Pickups and drop-offs by boat from the North bank at Paraa as well as lodges along the Southern banks of the Nile River can be pre-arranged.
We also offer a special leisure cruise Waterfall Sundowner Trip with drinks and snacks included which departs at 3.30 pm every afternoon (subject to minimum numbers) and private trips on an exclusive basis. You should please ensure that you are at the agreed departure points at least 15 minutes before departure time as timings may vary slightly depending upon the day’s pick up bookings.
This is an excellent opportunity for viewing the large resident populations of hippos and crocodiles, as well as other wildlife and extensive birdlife, including a wide range of water birds, and a huge colony of cliff-nesting red-throated bee-eaters, along the way.
We can offer you a private boat on the River exclusively for activities and timings to suit you. Perhaps some fishing combined with bird viewing or simply taking in the beauty and views from the boat as you search for the animals en route. Your guide can show you special places for a stop off and walk or moor up for a while and enjoy your sundowners. Just tell us your wishes and we will accommodate you as best we can.
Your leisure launch trip and park experience can be enhanced by combining river voyages with pre-arranged vehicle collection. Travel by boat to the delta and return to Paraa with a game drive through the game-rich Buligi area. Or leave your boat in Fajao Gorge and climb to the Top of the Falls for the view down into the thunderous chasm, before returning to Paraa by vehicle – either your own or we can arrange one for hire.
The meandering current and picturesque surroundings of the Nile River in Murchison Falls creates one of the most spectacular and enjoyable places in Uganda to witness the sunrise, the sunset, or to enjoy a glass of wine and a selection of cheeses. We organize a selection of leisure cruises, the perfect way to start or end your day on safari.
The mighty Nile River at Murchison is famous for its exciting sport fishing. Large, strong Nile Perch living in the turbulent waters below the falls as well as several species of catfish are fished and a variety of smaller species which are generally used as live bait for the larger fish.
Fishing can be done from the shore or from our boats which are ideally sized and equipped to cope with the conditions and accessing the remote riverside pools. Our experienced guides travel with you on the river at all times to ensure you have the best opportunities for success, whether it be for a day or over several days.
