Mabamba shoebill day trips from Entebbe – The Mabamba Wetland is a scenic swamp that has a wide array of bird species including the unique Shoebill Stork. The local community has worked hard for several years to preserve the swamp. The community provides boats that travel to Busi Island and guided boat tours to see the incredible shoebill. The local community also supplies life jackets if requested and we have child life jackets if requested.
The boat tour here takes about 3 hours from motorized traditional canoe boats that are used to move along the narrow channels of the great wetland as you search for the endangered shoebill stork and other rear birds in the wetland
The history of shoebill stork has not being a very big success rather than struggle to keep the few population of the pre-historic bird whose habitat has been threatened by human activities and Mabamba is one of the strong holds of the shoebill protection in uganda
On our tours we can either use motorized canoe boats to transfer you from Nakiwogo ferry station to the edge of the island where you will meet the wetland guides and head in to the swamp to search for the endangered shoebill stork
Depending on the time of the year usually your chances are higher during the dry season from June to October and December to February when the water levels are lower and there are a lot of mud pools that attract the mud and lung fish that is one of the prominent food sources of the shoebill stork
Morning hours are more convenient for searching for the endangered shoebill stork but there have been good records in the afternoon however there are risks of local fishermen disturbing the shoebill later in the day opposed to morning hours
Nkima Forest Lodge is located in its own patch of indigenous forest on Nansubuga hill overlooking the Mabamba Wetlands. The lodge has been built with minimal disturbance to the surrounding forest and the open grassland on top of the hill. The area is a birding hot spot in Uganda and the local community arrange boat trips into the swamp to view the Shoebill Stork and other birdlife from the nearby Mabamba landing site. The forest has numerous bird species, as well as Red-tailed monkeys (after which the lodge is named) and Vervet monkeys. The site also has many species of butterflies and insects, as well as smaller mammals such as squirrels, mongoose, and bushbabies. Bushbucks and duiker have occasionally been spotted. This is a small haven of wilderness within easy reach of Entebbe and Kampala that is perfect for those seeking peace, fresh air, and escape to an area of great natural beauty.
