Maiko national park Congo – is the second national park in Africa where you can track eastern lowland gorillas after famous kahuzi biega. Maiko national is located near Benin and the most fascinating activity is tracking the eastern lowland gorillas, there are also chimpanzees and other primates.
Maiko national park is locate in Democratic Republic of the Congo, it lies in one of the remote forest areas near Benin and it covers 10885 sq kms the park borders Okapi national game reserve, province Orientale and Maniema respectively.
Maiko national park is a critical sit for conservation of the endemic wildlife species such as genet cats, leopards, African forest elephants, the bongo antelope and the eastern chimpanzees and its managed by institute congolais conservation de la nature (ICCN).
It’s one of the list visited national parks in Democratic republic of congo since its establishment in 1970.before it was a home to the samba mai mai rebels until they were defeated in 1964.

The congo peafowl-the large under ground bird species can be seen in the forest and other iconic species include the rwenzori turaco and the handsome francolin, northern double coloured sunbirds and turacos and trogons can be obesrved
Maiko national park can be reached by road or air transport it approximately 515 kilometres from Kisangani town, there is a one road leading to small villages within the park from Bafwasende, the roads are not well established so make sure your vehicle is a four wheel drive and in good condition the park is easily accessible from Benin, Butembo or Okapi wildlife reserve.
Unfortunately there are no places to stay in maiko national park except camping and that will require the travellers to bring their own camping equipment.

The best time to visit maiko national park is in the dry season from late July to early September and from mid-December to late February.
