This adventure excursion will take you to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park where you will trek the Mountain Gorillas and also hike up the Mountain Sabinyo at an elevation of 3,645m one of the region’s inactive Volcanoes. You will have the opportunity to get up close to another endangered species, the Golden Monkey in its natural habitat of bamboo forest.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a home to one of the richest ecosystems in Africa. Mountain Gorillas are one of the world’s most endangered apes. It is estimated that there are only about 1080 left throughout the world. Almost half of them can be found in Uganda, and populations can also be found in the neighbouring Rwanda’ Volcanoes National Park and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Our Mgahinga Gorilla fly in safari will start with a transfer to Entebbe International Airport where you will catch your local flight to Kisoro Airstrip in southern Uganda. During the short flight you will be able to see Uganda´s diversity from high up. Great Adventure Safari driver guide will pick you up from the Airstrip and drive you up to your booked accommodation for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

The next day in the morning after your breakfast, the highlight of the Gorilla Tracking Adventure starts with a briefing at the trailhead, the park headquarters. At 8:00 am the Gorilla tracking will start with a detailed briefing about Gorilla etiquette. Depending on which family you are tracking, the briefing point is either 300 meters or 23 kilometres away. After the briefing we will either start walking from there or will be driven to the closest starting point. We will then start searching for the Mountain Gorillas. Once we find them, we will be allowed to spend one hour with them. Gorilla Trekking Adventure challenge is a hike through the natural African jungle accompanied by local guides around Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, one of the most diverse habitats on earth.

Another exciting adventure day is with a local community walking and canoe excursions on Lake Mutanda near Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Guided walking safari guide to commence walk to Lake Mutanda having been dropped by your safari vehicle and here a walk to the north shore of the Lake Mutanda is conducted where the dugout canoe team will rendezvous at the Rwajenje landing site with you to complete a traverse of the Lake over 2 and half hours to the southern shore. Then we will drive past Kisoro back to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is with 33 kilometres² the smallest National Park but its flora and fauna and the three Volcanoes offer a wide range of activities. You will report Ntebeko gate to conduct the Golden Monkey tracking activity. Golden Monkeys are unique species which can only be found on the Virunga Mountains.

Optional Mountain Sabinyo Volcano Climb

After breakfast proceed to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park headquarters for briefing to the start a Volcano climb of Mountain Sabinyo. Mountain Sabinyo, at an elevation of 3,669 metres, takes about eight hours to cover the 14kilometres round trip, following a steep ridge up to the peak. Mountain Sabinyo, is known locally as ‘Old Man’s Teeth’ because of its serrated rim, an extinct volcano and at 3645 metres it is one of the region’s highest peaks.
