Nairobi Animal Orphanage – “Refuge for the Wild” The Nairobi Animal Orphanage is located in the Nairobi National Park. It serves a treatments and rehabilitation centre for wild animals. The Orphanage hosts lions, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, serval cats, rare Sokoke cats, warthogs, leopards, various monkeys, baboons and buffalo. Various birds can also be viewed including parrots, guinea fowls, crowned cranes and ostriches. Established in 1964, the orphanage is the oldest of its kind Kenya and serves as an educational and training facility where more than 20 different animals and bird species are rehabilitated, treated after being abandoned or injured in the wild.
Nairobi Animal orphanage helps herbivores such as monkey, baboon, buffalo, warthog, as well as carnivore, such as Lion, Cheetah, rare Sokoke cat, jackal, serval, hyena, etc. Ostrich, parrot, Guinea fowl and crested crane are some of the bird species that are commonly rescued as they are usually in farms and communities. All animal receive medical examination, necessary treatment before being placed in a feeding and rehabilitation programs based on the cause of their state of orphanage. The Nairobi Animal Orphanage is both a conservation facility for animals in need and an educational resource for the public—mainly school children who wouldn’t otherwise have an opportunity to see these animals in the wild.
While it’s far from the majesty of seeing these creatures healthy in their natural habitats, each of the animals in the Nairobi Animal Orphanage has been taken in by park rangers to receive medical treatment before being placed in an individualized rehabilitation program for a second chance at life. The goal of the orphanage is to strengthen the animals so they may eventually be released back into the wild.
Nairobi tented camp is the only accommodation is located inside the national park and travelers can also stay st the Emakoko a family owned lodge.
Game drives in Nairobi national park are usually done in the morning and afternoon when wildlife are active and feeding and nature walks can be contacted near hippo pool.
