Nasera Rock Norongoro crater – A gneiss inselberg that is located near the northern border of the Ngorongoro conservation area It is Said to be the location of various archaeological findings most of which are stone artifacts high in quartz and obsidian, bone fragments and shreds of pottery – dated to as far back as 30,000 years ago. There also are rock paintings, most of which are faded out and hardly visible to all but rock art experts.
Admire the structure and even climb to its top for a magnificent view of the plains nearby, with the possibility of having one or two animals in the vicinity. Or try to spot the rock paintings in the area.
Any time of the year or better yet, in December (may vary slightly) during the wildebeest migration the biggest challenges are usually during the wet season in January to April which are also the calving season in the greater Serengeti and it’s a prime time to visit Tanzania.
Nasera rock is located near the north western border of the Ngorongoro conservation area, amongst vast plains that would fool anyone into thinking they are in the Serengeti, but this is not for another 15 or so kilometres west. There also are a few hills north and south of it. For more information on its location, please see the map below.
Mostly by vehicle, about a half hour drive north from the Olduvai gorge museum, and an hour from Naabi hell’s gate. You also can get there from anywhere inside the conservation area. As it is inside the conservation area, you would need to pay for permits before heading into it.
