The Nkuringo gorilla family was named after their founding alpha silverback called Nkuringo whose name translates as “Round Hill”. The family’s successful habituation ended in 2004 and Nkuringo died four years later. He was survived by two sons called Rafiki (meaning friend in Swahili) and Safari. Safari took leadership of the family and has been able to firmly hold all its members together through times of happiness and seasons of trial. The family joyfully embraced healthy baby twins just seven months into safari reign and they were named Katungi and Muhoozi. Sadly, Katungi passed on without seeing his second birthday. Currently the family has 19 members including 2 silverbacks.
