One hour Vs four hours Gorilla trekking – The Gorilla trekking experience allows you only one hour with the Mountain Gorillas. This is because, they are habituated and processed, to get used to human presence for just one hour in a day. This is for conservation reasons, as Mountain Gorillas must keep feeding and lounging as this is part of their daily life. Being with the Mountain Gorillas for four hours is called Gorilla habituation experience. The Gorilla habituation experience is an adventure where tourists escort a team of researchers and trackers in the wilderness to follow a semi-habituated Gorilla family and stay with them for four hours.

Gorilla Habituation Experience gives you an opportunity to spend much time with the Mountain Gorillas that is four hours encounter different from the one-hour encounter during the normal gorilla tracking. This experience is unique given the fact it gives you an opportunity to learn more about Mountain Gorillas.

Gorilla habituation experience involves spending four hours which start counting when you find the fresh trails of these giants from where they last nested the previous night, and this is only available in the Rushaga sector in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. 

A Gorilla trekking permit costs USD800 per person per trek, while the Gorilla habituation permit costs USD1500 per person per trek.

The Mountain Gorillas observed during the habituation experience are less used to human presence than those seen on the standard Gorilla trekking.  These experiences are all safe and the benefit of spending more time with Mountain Gorillas is that you can better understand their behaviours and social dynamics, as well as get incredible photographs, without being rushed.

Availability of Gorilla permits

Uganda is the only country currently offering Gorilla habituation experience, which is the safari that lasts 4 hours, at the moment and only four Gorilla permits per day are open for public booking. As the quest for extra time with the Mountain Gorillas grew from one hour of trekking, the Uganda Wildlife Authority introduced the Gorilla habituation experience in 2014 to give tourists spare time before the Mountain Gorillas. Initially, tourists who wanted extra time with the Mountain Gorillas would book a second Gorilla trekking day. This is still happening because of the limited Gorilla families open for Gorilla habituation experience.
