Gorilla permit can be booked from anywhere in the world depending on the specific location for your gorilla trekking. Gorilla trekking can only be guaranteed if one has a valid gorilla permit, therefore you are recommended to secure and book your permits in advance. Gorilla trekking is possible in any of the three East African countries that are Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Uganda gorilla permits go for $700 therefore you can reserve your permit early in advance before the deadline on June 30, 2020 when the permit prices will be increased. For Rwanda, the permit costs $1500 per permit and its per person trekking. And Congo is $400 per permit. Rwanda gorilla permits are expensive compared to Uganda and the DRC.
Once we have agreed on your preferred dates according to availability of the permits, you will go ahead and make payments for your gorilla permit(s). Great Adventure Safaris will send you an invoice instructing you to go ahead and make payments for the gorilla permit in order to confirm your booking and secure the permits for you. When making payments, we at Great Adventure Safaris, we accept both bank transfers and credit card payments or even cash (not common) it’s all your choice, in case you may choose to pay using credit card, you will pay a surcharge fee of 4% charge on every transaction made, Which is not the case with wire transfers. Once we have received the confirmation of your payments, we will go ahead and pay the permit for you so that we assure of the availability of your permit, after the payments, we will send you a scanned copy of the receipts of payments and when the time comes, we will collect the permits for you, the guide will give you the original copy of your permit that you will present on the day of your gorilla trekking. Also note that the permit fees bare the park entry fees for Bwindi impenetrable forest or Mgahinga Gorilla national park, services of an English-speaking guide in the forest, one hour with the gorillas in their natural habitat. Uganda gorilla trekking is done at Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and Mgahinga national park situated in south western Uganda. And for Rwanda, is in volcanoes national park. Before booking your gorilla permit, it’s always recommended for you first to know the number of gorilla families available in each national park which are open for tracking, so that you are able to know the total number of permits issued per day for gorilla trekking. Bwindi national park has the highest number of gorillas with over half of the worlds to total population therefore, Bwindi and Mgahinga national park altogether has over 19 habituated gorilla families and 2 of these families are reserved for gorilla habituation experience. Habituation experience is a newly introduced activity in Bwindi currently done in the southern sector of Bwindi at the Rushaga sector of Bwindi and the permit fee goes for $1500 per person for four hours with the gorillas. Rwanda on the other hand, at the volcanoes national park has got 20 gorilla families, 10 of which are habituated for gorilla trekking and the remaining 10 are for research.
Bwindi impenetrable forest national park has four sectors from which gorilla trekking takes place (Rushaga, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Buhoma sectors). All having gorilla habituated families, Bwindi impenetrable forest harbors the highest number of gorillas and the park has currently 18 gorilla families which keep increasing daily since new ones are being habituated. The maximum number of people allowed to visit the gorillas is 8 people per group meaning that Uganda wildlife authority issues 162 permits for gorilla trekking each day. Also note that, gorilla permit booking is done per sector depending on the availability of the permits. Mgahinga national park is one of the smallest national parks in Uganda situated in southwestern Uganda on the boarder to Rwanda and DR. Congo. Mgahinga harbors only one gorilla habituated family, therefore, Uganda wildlife authority, issues only 8 gorilla permits for trekking every day. Nyakagezi gorilla group is the smallest to track since the gorillas involve within the forest and do not move a lot. Although they used to migrate to volcanoes national park, but have settled in Uganda for the last 4 years meaning their permits can be booked and trekked in Uganda.
Volcanoes national park, harbors 20 gorilla families and only 10 are habituated for gorilla trekking and the remaining 10 are reserved for research purposes. 8 people area allowed visiting each gorilla family per day. Rwanda Development Board issues total amount of 80 gorilla permits per day for the visitors visiting the gorillas.
