Gorilla trekking family allocation – may first time tourists/ visitors commonly ask which gorilla family to trek? So now in this article we try to give more light on how habituated mountain gorilla families are allocated for visitors taking part in the gorilla trekking experience, in Bwindi impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga gorilla National park, and Volcanoes National Park.
In the first place when gorilla trekking had just started in Uganda’s Bwindi impenetrable forest and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, both had different ways in which gorilla families were allocated to tourists on gorilla trekking. Rwanda used to allocate gorilla families in the interests of each individual available to do the activity and in Uganda, gorilla permits were allocated according to each habituated gorilla families for instance, by then Bwindi impenetrable forest National Park had 10 habituated gorilla families open for gorilla trekking, and had various names given to each gorilla family, with all information circulating on the internet and a traveler would read the information about the gorillas and gorilla families in Uganda, so they inquire when already know the gorilla family he/she wants to trek for example Mubare Family {M} and this meant that gorillas families with few members, no silver back, no young/baby gorillas would be left out because they wouldn’t be of interest to tourists.
This after some time affected gorilla trekking family allocation and gorilla permit allocation where by Mubare gorilla family {M} used to be the least booked while Rushagura gorilla family {R} used to be the most booked, this would lead to shortage of gorilla permits for a particular gorilla family and reduce on the revenue as the other gorilla permits would be left out unsold. Now ever since the authority habituated more gorilla families in Bwindi impenetrable forest and Mgahinga forest National Park to 18 gorilla families and open for trekking, now habituated gorilla families are split in all the five gorilla trekking sectors, Buhoma sector, Ruhija sector,Rushaga sector, Nkuringo sector and Mgahinga, and gorilla trekking takes place in all the five sectors with the same experience. As of now the system of allocating gorilla families is the same in Uganda and Rwanda as a way of maximizing sales by Uganda Wildlife Authority.
